Merle Haggard
An ex-con turned country music legend, Merle Haggard has produced a tremendous body of work that includes 76 studio albums and 38 number-one hits, beginning with 1966’s “I’m a Lonesome Fugitive” and including the oft-covered “The Legend of Bonnie and Clyde.” Earning the moniker “Poet of the Common Man,” Haggard is known for his candid observations, rough-hewn vocals, and hard-edged, blues-influenced style. Considered one of the most important country artists to emerge from the ’60s, he and Buck Owens helped create the Bakersfield sound in reaction to the over-produced honky-tonk coming out of Nashville. An incredibly influential artist still going strong in 2011, Haggard has not only earned a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame but a lifetime achievement award from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in honor of his outstanding contribution to American culture. Listening to Haggard on vinyl is extremely rewarding (and sure to make him happy).
