  • Mingus

Joni Mitchell’s tenth studio album, Mingus, began as a collaboration between Mitchell and modern jazz legend Charles Mingus. However, Mingus died of Lou Gehrig’s Disease before the project was completed. Recruiting the help of Jaco Pastorius (bass), Wayne Shorter (soprano sax), Herbie Hancock (electric piano), Peter Erskine (drums), Don Alias (congas), and Emil Richards (percussion), Mitchell finished the album considered by many to be her most daring. A distinguishing characteristic of Mingus is its “raps” or short tape recordings spliced between jazz pieces. These include Mitchell and Mingus scat singing together (“I’s a Muggin'”), Mingus and his wife arguing over his age at a birthday party (“Happy Birthday 1975”), and Mingus talking with friends about his funeral (“Funeral”). Mingus’ contribution to the album also includes “A Chair in the Sky,” “Sweet Sucker Dance,” “The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines,” and his Lester Young tribute, “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” all featuring Mitchell’s lyrics set to Mingus’ arrangements.
