Emmylou Harris
Emmylou Harris has a voice that feels as vital to American roots music as the acoustic guitar. She got her start singing alongside Gram Parsons, who served as her mentor until his untimely death in 1973, and released her own debut album, the eclectic Pieces of the Sky, in 1975. Her next release, 1975’s Elite Hotel, not only topped the country charts, it was a crossover rock success and won Harris her first of many Grammys. Over the years, Harris has established her own stellar songwriting chops and recorded with a number of luminaries including Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Neil Young, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt (her collaborations with the latter two yielding the acclaimed Trio sessions). Equally as impressive, Harris has achieved longevity; decades after the release of her debut album, she is just as vital as ever—performing on the Lilith Fair tour in the late ’90s, on the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack in 2000, on Bright Eyes’ 2005 Americana album I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning, and with Elvis Costello on the Cold Mountain soundtrack. It’s a voice that never loses its charm, and it’s a voice that must be heard on vinyl.
