Oliver Messiaen, a French composer, organist, and ornithologist, was considered a child prodigy as he entered the Paris Conservatoire at only age 11. Messiaen had an extraordinary life with one part of his life being spent as a prisoner of war. He took that time to compose his famous “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” for four available instruments. After his release he was appointed professor of harmony and of composition. He was influential on many future students because of his rhythmically complex music which was something that he himself developed. Listening to some of his successes such as “Birdsong” are simply fascinating when heard on vinyl.
