Astrud Gilberto
At the last minute, Astrud Gilberto, wife of bossa nova great João Gilberto, was asked to lend some English vocals on what would become the huge 1964 crossover hit “The Girl from Ipanema.” This not only marked her professional singing debut, it established her as the Queen of Bossa Nova in both the U.S. and Brazil. She released her debut solo album, The Astrud Gilberto Album, in 1965, and enjoyed a rich music career over the next few decades, recording nearly a dozen albums for the Verve label including 1966’s Gil Evans-arranged Look to the Rainbow and the dreamy, Walter Wanderley-arranged A Certain Smile, a Certain Sadness. Her breathy, honey-toned voice is a delight on vinyl.
