Captain Beefheart
Don Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, is an enigmatic artist whose avant-garde take on rock, blues, psychedelia, and free jazz has put him in a category all his own. Though much of his music was too daring (or weird) for the mainstream, Captain Beefheart had a huge cult following and is recognized as an important influence on New Wave, punk, post-punk, and alternative rock. With a rotating ensemble of musicians called the Magic Band, he recorded 13 studio albums between 1965 and 1982, his most famous being 1969’s Trout Mask Replica, which was ranked #58 in Rolling Stone‘s 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This magnum opus deserves to be in every vinyl record collection.
